Ma(r)xTutorials **new version** 2007

A set of Max tutorials for beginningers.  It contains a collections of small demos and examples that could serve as tutorials and/or models for students just beginning to learn Max.  For the most part they are pretty well documented.  It is intended to suppliment the tutorials that come with the program.

Download links:
Ma(r)xTutorials.zip (ca. 84k) — for "zip" compression for OS X or Windows
(Windows users -- Good luck! I have no way of doing detailed tests.)

NOTE: This file is a single large "multi-layered" patch -- not a stand alone application.  It requires that you have installed the full Max program (or at least a demo of the progam) or the freely distributed MaxPlayer.  I assume it will work under both Mac and Windows operating sysytems, but I have no way of testing on Windows.

I've also created a small Index of the patcher names used in the tutorial (in "pdf" format).

Electro-Acoustic Music Primer
<>Electro-Acoustic Music PrimerX: (c. 5.5 MB)  *** New version (2007) ***
(a ".zip" compressed archive) -- Created using MaxMSP 4.6.2 from Cycling'74. (Written on a G5 running Tiger OS, tested and runs easily on a modest G4 platform, too.)

This is a "stand alone" Mac application (Windows users scroll down a further for a version you can use) designed to help teach some basic audio principles and common synthesis techniques to beginning students.  There is also a ProjectSynthPack module with a some modestly more elaborate demonstration synths and audio file manglers.  My students use them as a resource for their first electronic music mini-projects.

NEW FEATURES: Completely new look, graphically; Several new modules (GraphicFilter and "Dripsody" in the Filters&LFO module; DeluxePanner, WaveSurfer, ModWheelScales, and NoiseySynth2 in the ProjectSynthPack module.)  Several of the ProjectSynths are now polyphonic (FM_MIDI-Synth, FM_MIDI-Synth+, AdditiveSynthesizer, AdditiveSynthesizer+).

Pierre'sPlayhouse got a substantial overhaul.  (It's now a little easier to get started with it.  A couple of pre-loaded samples are included to get you going quickly and there's a little more
documentation.  Several small refinements make the patch a little more predictable and intuitive, too. It also now has an optional pop-up sub-patch that implements wide range of stereo panning features.)

***Previous
improvements from OS 9 version:  Oscilloscopes were added to several modules that previously did not have them. MIDI control and sound file record/playback were added to all of the modules in the "Filters&LFO_Modulation" heading.  A few more comments, explanations, and some "preset" demos were added throughout, while an attempt was made to standardize the look and feel of the modules a bit more.

Below is a link for downloading all the individual modules.  Windows users should use this link.  Mac user who need (or want) to do their own compiling, for whatever reason, should use it, too.  Anyone with a full copy of Max/MSP 4.6.2 (either platform) can also use this link to look "under the hood" and see everything about how all the modules work.

E-A_MusicPrimerFolder.zip (ca. 440 KB) — for Mac OS X or Windows.
This is obviously not a stand alone application.  It requires that you install the full Max program (a free demo of the progam is available) ...OR ... the freely distributed MaxPlayer.   (Windows users — Good luck! I have no way of doing detailed testing.  Several of my windows students have gotten these things to work, though, so that should give you some encouragement.)

PluggoVST.zip  (ca. 320k) — This file is a collection of VST plug-ins derived from the ProjectSynth module of my E-A_MusicPrimer.
Contents include the following: AdditiveSynth, FM-Synth, DeepSpace (automated sine waves), ModWheelMayhem, ModWheelScales, NoiseySynth2, PannerDeluxe, and Pierre'sPlayhouse.

NOTE: To use this set of plug-ins you need to download the free run-time version of Pluggo from the Cycling'74 site.  Then place the plugin modules in a folder named Pluggo and place that folder in the folder with your other VST plug-ins.  Then launch your VST host application.

also available: (old "legacy" OS 9 version)
Electro-Acoustic Music Primer: (ca 600k)   old OS 9 version
E-A MusicPrimerFolder.sit (ca. 100k) — OS 9 version

Useful Utility Application
: a Max/MSP-based 5.1 Studio Tester
stand alone application: StudioTester.zip
simple patcher: StudioTestPatch.zip  (re-configurable if you have Max/MSP)

I designed to be useful for checking to see that all signal paths are good, that and levels and frequency, response, etc., are consistent; that all speakers are all working properly, where the sweet spot is for monitoring, etc.. Easy access to your choice of white or pink noise ... or whatever external source you want to plug in; instantly route to any combination speakers; switch speakers on and off with ease; instantly "kill" all speakers, etc..

In combination with some analysis programs, we have used it recently as a resource when checking room coloration, frequency nodes, and reverb decay.
