Charles J. Ping
Institute for the Teaching of the Humanities
Summer Institute, 2007
The History of Art in Spain
Program Description:
Ohio University’s Charles J. Ping Institute for the
Teaching of the Humanities will sponsor a 2007 Summer Institute,
a seminar on art history from June 21 through 30, in Spain (Madrid and
Bilbao). The
program is designed to familiarize fifteen Ohio
humanities teachers with the history of Western art, with an emphasis on painting, from
the
Renaissance to the twenty-first century, introduce them to artistic
analysis, and provide them with ideas for enriching their classes with
reference to art.
On June 21, 2007, the group will meet at the
hotel in Madrid. Participants
must make their own travel arrangements to Madrid and
inform the director of flight number and time of arrival.
A
typical day
will consist of a museum visit from 10:00-2:00. Afternoons will
be
free for materials acquisition in museum shops and bookstores and, in
addition, completion of a one-hour reading assignment related to the
next day’s theme. Discussion over dinner will focus on
analyzing the day’s experiences and discussing the reading in
anticipation of the following day.
Teachers will pay airfare, one meal per day, and
incidental expenses; the Ping Institute will cover lodging, breakfast
and dinner, museum entrances, and travel within Spain.
If a participant wishes to receive graduate credit, he or she may
enroll in and pay tuition for 1-5 quarter hours, then design a teaching
unit or complete a research project related to the seminar theme.

option.)
Spanish language proficiency is not required. All reading
materials for the program will be available in English for non
Spanish-speaking participants. Employees of Spanish museums speak
English, and the museums publish English-language editions of catalogs,
instructional materials, textbooks, and other art books.
