Hello.  I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at Ohio University where I teach courses in general geology and ichnology.  For a list of courses that I teach at Ohio University click here.  To learn about my research please see my Research page.  For a complete copy of my Curriculum vitae click here.

I am originally from Tempe, Arizona but spent a significant portion of my life in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Before starting my academic career, I served in the United Stated Army and the Louisiana National Guard as both an infantryman and a military policeman.

I attended the University of New Orleans where I earned by Bachelors of Science degree in Geology in 1999.  I was bit by the geology bug after my first year at UNO having started as an English major.  While at UNO I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Kraig Derstler and participated in dinosaur excavations in Wyoming.  I completed my graduate work, both Masters and Ph.D., in 2005 in the Department of Geology at the University of Kansas with Dr. Larry Martin and Dr. Stephen Hasiotis, respectively.  While at KU I had the opportunity to work with an excellent group of graduate students with similar research interests.

When I’m not working I enjoy hiking, kayaking, camping, reading, and the occasional computer game.  Recent trips in the United States have taken me to the White Mountains of New Hampshire (pictured at left), Smokey Mountain National Park in Tennessee, the Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and my favorite so far, Alaska.

Geology provides an excuse to travel to some of the most exciting locations in the United States and the world.  I made my first trip across the Atlantic Ocean in 2007 to attend a meeting of the International Biogeography Conference held in the Canary Islands.  The Canaries are a chain of volcanic islands off the coast of Morocco, Africa.  While there I visited the third largest volcano on Earth, el Teide, on the island of Tenerife.

My most recent trip was to Alaska in the summer of 2007.  The trip involved three weeks of camping, hiking, kayaking, and cruising in the Kenai Peninsula, Denali National Park, and Prince William Sound.  Alaska offers a rare glimpse of the world in its natural state.  I highly recommend a visit.

I am currently writing a research grant for future work on burrowing organisms in Alaska.  Interested students should check News and Opportunities for updates.

Thank you for visiting my website.  If you have any questions concerning my research, desire reprints of my recent papers, or are a geology student looking for a graduate school please send me an email at hembree@ohio.edu.
