I AM PREGNANT

There is hope for all of you women with PCOS who want to get pregnant! I have had PCOS all of my life (like most of you), but I wasn't diagnosed until January 1998, but wasn't treated for PCOS until June 2000. (Sound familiar?) Below are the steps that I took to concieve. Of course, it may not work for everyone.

June 2000--Began taking 500 mg of metformin 3X a day. I did not modify my diet, begin exercising, or anything else.

July 2000--Stared paying even closer attention to my uterine position and cervical mucous.

August 2000--Began taking 850 mg of metformin 3X a day. Again, no change in diet or activity level. And, no other supplements.

September 10--Breasts extremely sore, but didn't make a connection.

September 16, 17, 18--Tested positive on three home pregnancy tests.

September 26--Pregnancy confirmed!

Problems I have experienced so far:

  • My progesterone levels have been too low. My doctor gave me 400 mg of progesterone to take daily.
  • Vaginal bleeding. First, from the low level of progesterone and now from what appears to be a low-lying placenta.
  • Baby has been healthy and growing strong since the beginning. No problems there!

December 15--It is almost Christmas and things are going very well. I had two severe bouts of vaginal bleeding, but everything is fine now. According to my last ultrasound at 12 weeks, I have a complete placenta previa, which means that the placenta is completely covering my cervix. One doc says it is likey to resolve. Another doc says that it will not. I guess I have to wait and see. If it does not resolve, then I will have to have a C-section. I don't know how prepared I am for that. I am just grateful to be pregnant, though. I have not gained any weight yet, but I am sure that when I go in again I will show some gain.

January 25, 2001--Good news! The placenta has migrated away from the cervix and is now on the back wall of my uterus. Although it is still close to my cervix, it is far enough away that it will continue to move and not be a problem in regards to natural childbirth. Thank goodness!

The only other problem that I have had is that I was spilling sugar into my urine at my last ob visit, which could mean that I am heading for gestational diabetes. Very scary and very possible with PCOS pregnancies. I should find out more about that when I go in on Tuesday for my next ob appt.

Now that things are going much better, we are both starting to get excited about the baby's arrival. We have bought some clothes and acessories and some other cute baby things. There for awhile, we didn't think it was going to happen.
